This logic is common to eval.c:get_winnr, it could be extracted to a function win_get_winnr(win_T) in src/nvim/window.c. (That's a compromise between using the API directly from eval.c, which is an "ideal" we want to drive towards.)

get_winnr isn't actually a good fit, since we don't know what tabpage the window is in. Instead, I've extracted the core of win_id2tabwin and used that.

what happens if the window queried is not in curtab? surely we shouldn't abort then.

Correct. It's a WIP. :) I'll likely pull the guts of win_id2tabwin out into another function and use that instead.
In order to provide better compatibility with the classic bindings, the API needs to provide the ability to query the number (really index) of the window/tabpage. This is needed for neovim/pynvim#87, as discussed in neovim#1898. Signed-off-by: James McCoy <jamessan@jamessan.com>
