We welcome the Joint Committee on Human Rights’ report into Forced Labour in UK Supply Chains. ✅ Mandatory human rights due diligence for businesses ✅ Import bans on goods tainted by forced labour ✅ Consequences for non-compliance Stronger oversight and guidance will help businesses protect workers and keep exploitation out of their operations and supply chains.

🗞️ Just released 🎉 a report by the Joint Committee on Human Rights - Forced Labour in UK Supply Chains. Initial response is that I am delighted with the recommendations. Here's a very quick summary: This report addresses the critical issue of forced labour within UK supply chains, asserting that goods produced through such exploitation are reaching British consumers. The report highlights the inadequacy of current UK legislation and a lack of cohesive government leadership in tackling this problem, leading to a risk of the UK becoming a "dumping ground" for tainted products. It strongly advocates for new, comprehensive legislation that would introduce mandatory Human Rights Due Diligence for businesses, establish a clear Import Ban on goods tainted by forced labour—especially state-imposed—and create a civil cause of action for survivors to seek justice, shifting the burden of proof to corporations. The report also scrutinises the UK's approach to human rights in trade agreements and public procurement, particularly within the high-risk solar industry, and stresses the vital importance of incorporating survivor voices in policy-making. 🚨 "Demand for the helpline continues to grow, with nearly 1,000 calls and contacts per month," says Justine Carter, Deputy CEO at Unseen. This week, Justine spoke to BBC South East about the harrowing reality of modern slavery. The report covered the trafficking of survivors in a lorry—one of the few cases where the traffickers received prison sentences, despite low conviction rates nationally. 🔎 Learn how to spot the signs of exploitation and report concerns: https://lnkd.in/eHRafA3p https://lnkd.in/eZcSeuu8 #modernslavery #humantrafficking #exploitation #spotthesigns

Recently, we were pleased to host a visit by Rt Hon Theresa May MP to our Unseen offices in Bristol. As one of the driving forces behind the 2015 Modern Slavery Act, Theresa May has played a pivotal role in shaping the UK's response to modern slavery. While in Bristol, she made a point to visit Unseen to hear directly about the frontline realities we're seeing, and how our services and partnerships are evolving to meet them. We had the opportunity to share updates on our Helpline, survivor support work, and the impact of business engagement in tackling exploitation. Her interest and continued commitment to this cause are powerful reminders of how policy and practice must go hand in hand. A proud and energising moment for our team. #EndModernSlavery #Leadership #BTS #HumanRights #TheresaMay #ModernSlaveryAct Andrew Wallis OBE Justine Carter Lauren Saunders Natasha Mitra

🚨 Excited to be part of this important research project investigating the Employer Pays Principle in Malaysia’s healthcare supply chains, working alongside Brighton and Sussex Medical School , Newcastle University, and Impactt Limited. Preventing debt bondage and forced labour is vital for protecting migrant workers who supply medical gloves to the NHS and beyond. Learn more ⬇️
📢 NEW PROJECT! Preventing debt bondage in healthcare supply chains. Malaysia is a key global supplier of medical gloves, including to the UK’s NHS, but evidence reveals systemic forced labour issues, often stemming from migrant workers burdened by high recruitment debts. While international scrutiny, especially from the US forced labour bans, has pushed some companies to adopt the Employer Pays Principle (EPP) and reimburse fees, there remains limited understanding of how effectively EPP has been implemented what is its long-term impact. A research project carried out by a partnership of the Brighton and Sussex Medical School at University of Sussex, Newcastle University, Impactt Limited and Unseen UK, is evaluating the effectiveness of this specific intervention – the EPP – in preventing debt bondage as a key driver of exploitation and other indicators of forced labour.
