This warning was popping up in scenarios where it wasn't meant to be shown, as the original purpose
was to notify of the KV layout change in disagg PD setups.

👋 Hi! Thank you for contributing to the vLLM project.

💬 Join our developer Slack at https://slack.vllm.ai to discuss your PR in #pr-reviews, coordinate on features in #feat- channels, or join special interest groups in #sig- channels.

Just a reminder: PRs would not trigger full CI run by default. Instead, it would only run fastcheck CI which starts running only a small and essential subset of CI tests to quickly catch errors. You can run other CI tests on top of those by going to your fastcheck build on Buildkite UI (linked in the PR checks section) and unblock them. If you do not have permission to unblock, ping simon-mo or khluu to add you in our Buildkite org.

Once the PR is approved and ready to go, your PR reviewer(s) can run CI to test the changes comprehensively before merging.

To run CI, PR reviewers can either: Add ready label to the PR or enable auto-merge.

Summary of Changes

Hello @NickLucche, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request addresses an issue where a specific warning related to KV cache layout was being displayed unnecessarily in certain configurations. My changes refine the conditions under which this warning is issued, ensuring it only appears when relevant to disaggregated setups. Additionally, I've updated a related log message to reference the correct environment variable name.

Highlights

  • Warning Suppression: I've updated the logic in vllm/distributed/kv_transfer/kv_connector/utils.py to prevent the Unable to detect current VLLM config. Defaulting to NHD kv cache layout warning from appearing in scenarios where it's not relevant. Specifically, the warning will now only be triggered if KV transfer configuration (kv_config) is present but the model configuration (model_config) is missing, aligning with its intended purpose for disaggregated PD setups.
  • Log Message Correction: I've corrected a log message in vllm/v1/attention/backends/utils.py to accurately reflect the environment variable name for KV cache layout. The message now refers to VLLM_KV_CACHE_LAYOUT instead of FLASHINFER_KV_CACHE_LAYOUT.

Code Review

This pull request addresses an issue where a warning about VLLM config detection was being shown in incorrect scenarios. The changes correctly scope this warning to disaggregated prefill/decode setups by checking if KV transfer is configured before issuing the warning. Additionally, a log message has been updated to reference the correct environment variable, VLLM_KV_CACHE_LAYOUT. The changes are logical, well-contained, and improve the accuracy of the logging. I don't see any issues of medium or higher severity.
