Reverts #80356
x-ref: #67005 (comment)
Reported that Google Search Console is having issue on handling the https schema which leads to sitemap is not well crawled. Reverting the original change back to before. This will cause the localized sitemap not visualized well in the Chrome again, but it should be fixed on Chrome XML viewer side.

Closes #81644

Frankly, this situation has become quite ridiculous. It's been months that many developers are reporting the same critical issues with multilingual sitemaps and XML schema handling in Next.js and Vercel, and still, there’s no reliable fix in place. Something as basic as proper sitemap generation—essential for SEO—should not be this problematic in a mature framework.

It’s honestly unacceptable that we have to look for workarounds or patch things ourselves for such a fundamental feature, while waiting for a definitive solution. I really hope the team will prioritize this soon, as it’s seriously impacting our ability to rely on the platform for professional projects.

Hi, this PR is released within the Next.js patch 15.4.4, you can upgrade to latest Next.js.

Regarding to the multilingual sitemap display issue, it's caused by the XML viewer issue of browsers, when the protocol is http, there's a redirection causing the XML viewer cannot render it like XML when you view in browser (related comment: #67005 (comment)). However it doesn't mean it's broken for crawlers. Https protocol can let the XML viewer work but in Google Search Console it will cause issues. It's unfortunate that it couldn't co-exist. Want to clarify that it's not really a Vercel deployment issue but more like a browser and 3rd party service issue.

We understand your fraustration and we're looking for the better solution that can improve this situation. Thanks.

Thanks for your explanation. I understand the XML viewer behavior in browsers causes visual issues, but what really matters for us is that Google Search Console correctly accepts and parses the multilingual sitemap with hreflang.

Since the https schema fix patched the browser rendering but now causes problems in GSC, could you please clarify what is the recommended concrete solution or best practice to ensure Google properly recognizes and indexes the sitemap with alternates.languages?

Without a reliable fix or clear workaround, this issue seriously impacts SEO for multilingual sites relying on Next.js 15 and Vercel.

Looking forward to a practical guidance or timeline for resolution.

I am using Next.js "^15.4.4".

In Google Search Console (GSC), I always get the error "Couldn't fetch" for the sitemap.

Here are the different versions I have tested:

https://gymlog.eu/sitemap.xml : GSC error, browser Not OK (displayed as plain text, not recognized as XML)

https://gymlog.eu/sitemap-google.xml : GSC OK, browser OK, but this solution does not follow Google’s official sitemap recommendations

https://gymlog.eu/sitemap-google-v2.xml : GSC OK, browser Not OK (displayed as plain text, not recognized as XML)

https://gymlog.eu/sitemap-google-v3.xml : GSC error "Incorrect namespace", browser OK

Do you have any suggestions to resolve this issue so that the sitemap is compliant with Google’s recommendations, accepted by GSC, and accessible in the browser?

gymlog.eu/sitemap-google-v2.xml looks correct, the bad display is more liek a browser issue.
