The example was 2 major versions behind. The `@mdx-js/react` dependency was removed, as it doesn’t work with the app directory. Users should use `mdx-components.tsx` instead. Refs vercel#59693

### What? Update the `with-mdx` example to MDX 3. ### Why? The example was 2 major versions behind. ### How? By updating the version in `package.json`. They have to forget what they thought they knew about Next/MDX and carefully re-read https://nextjs.org/docs/app/building-your-application/configuring/mdx. |

As a general rule, I would always read the Ideally, the experience here with App Router would be much better, where all you would need to do is add an Blog posts can be dated—can you share which blog post you are referring to? |
https://nextjs.org/docs/app and https://nextjs.org/docs/app/building-your-application/upgrading/app-router-migration don’t mention MDX.

No. I was just quickly listing reasons why people might not follow the official setup instructions step-by-step. I personally ran into this trying to migrate from the pages directory to the app router. |
Right, but since a lot of things posted on Stack Overflow are stale or flat out incorrect, I would still recommend users to not look at Stack Overflow.

I think the main reason it’s still present in Next.js, is that MDX 1 required |

Given a user uses the Next.js app directory, and doesn’t have an `mdx-components` file; 1. If the user has `@mdx-js/react` installed, Next.js shows a cryptic error message, stating only client components may use React context. 2. If the user doesn’t have `@mdx-js/react` installed, Next.js shows a cryptic error message, stating `next-mdx-import-source-file` could not be resolved. This fixes 2 by providing a fallback. I suggest fixing 1, by completely removing all references to `@mdx-js/react` from the project.

Given a user uses the Next.js app directory, and doesn’t have an
mdx-componentsfile;@mdx-js/reactinstalled, Next.js shows a cryptic error message, stating only client components may use React context.@mdx-js/reactinstalled, Next.js shows a cryptic error message, statingnext-mdx-import-source-filecould not be resolved.How?
This fixes 2 by providing a fallback.
I suggest fixing 1, by completely removing all references to
@mdx-js/reactfrom the project.
