What is holding this? It seems that the test failures on macos conda are not relevant to this PR. |

Right, these test failures should be hopefully fixed with the next beta release (e.g. with #39153). I'll then rebase which should turn the tests green. |
This reverts commit 778c4f6.

So, all tests are finally passing. Hence this PR is now ready for review. |
