Thank you for the quick PR! When I was in the Wasm meeting I didn't quite understand the decision.
Did we choose the the metric type during runtime?

We are iterating over all the possible enum value.
Could you use switch case without default? That's a strong indication that all the values are considered. And modern compiler can guarantee that (if a value is skipped compiler will fail to compile)

Sadly that is only for well behaved code. There is an underlying enum type and nothing prevents a poorly behaved program from mashing that value at which point the non of the cases are executed:

Thank you for this code. I didn't think of this bad value case. However, isn't this a perfect usage in this case?

  • return id in known value (and early return)
  • replace cout << "Done" by return 0

Changed it to a 'switch'. Code is much larger because of the additional scopes required to handle the local iterator, but it does mean that there will be an error if a new type is added to the enum.

This is confusing. Could you elaborate? Looks like Wasm could either own scope_ or not own. If so, we doesn't Wasm always have a reference to Stats::Scope& scope_?

Yes, it always has a scope_. It only has the owned_scope_ when it is not using the scope provided by the stream e.g. in the case of Filters.

These are mutable. They start with the say kMetricTypeCounter then are incremented by kMetricIdIncrement to get new counter specific indexes.

The ownership is shared because that is the API for Scope. I could create a separate createWasm which just takes the Scope pointer, but I thought that it wasn't worth the maintainance overhead.

This test sends a large number of metadata frames in order to trigger a disconnect. However, it was possible for the disconnect to happen and the connection to be torn down before all the metadata frames had been sent. If that happened, ASAN detected a UAF:
