Kibana3 pre-5, Elasticsearch 0.9.11

I add a terms panel to my dashboard and set the field name to a field in my logs (program in my case). I am not seeing all of the program names that should be shown. My only query is just "*" so I would expect to see everything. If I change the terms panel to use "pinned" queries (there are none) instead of the default "all" it works and shows all of the programs. Any idea why this is happening?
