@chris-hamper Thanks for filing this PR, I understand where you're coming from and agree there's definitely some use for this!

That being said, I will have to reject this PR for now as it doesn't provide any substantial value for consumers of this package and also locks out a non-zero number of dependents of this package. This may change in the future of course, but I'm still seeing a noticeable number of installation on PHP versions that are not officially supported by Zend, but are still officially supported by a number of common vendors and distributions. I understand this is a controversial topic and do not wish to start a heated discussion about this decision. Thank you for your understanding.

Despite this, I would again like to thank you for your contribution, this is very much appreciated, even if I didn't merge it this time. Please don't see this as discouraging and keep it coming!
