I wonder why GitHub won't add support for WebP or AVIF. Both are supported by all browsers. |

Screenshots of high-DPI displays are too large if compressed with PNG (current). |

@satyanadella isn't this easy to vibe code, should be a good test for AI progress? :) (I'm half joking here) |

Surprising it still wasn't added. AVIF is a good replacement for JPEGs and using PNG isn't always optimal. Please add it. |

A few years ago I had (or rather, made) the choice to switch away from png and jpeg for my local collection of fotos, for various reasons - the simplest being file efficiency. I tested both webp and avif and actually found avif slightly better than webp (your mileage may vary here, but I found avif better overall). Each of these two formats, though, was much better than jpg, gif, png and so forth. I have now used .avif for several years and I can recommend it. Recently some support was added at github for bmp and tiff. I would highly recommend the github staff to seriously consider both webp and avif (but, especially avif). Having smaller file sizes at near or almost near exact quality, is useful; jpeg also was that, but its quality is IMO significantly worse than avif. |

The AVIF image format offers significant file size reduction for lossy images compared with JPEG and even WebP.
And the AVIF support has been integrated into popular browsers and other software applications.
But Github doesn't support that file type yet.
The AVIF image offers significant file size reduction so that network transmission will be faster than PNG/JPEG images.
