pcolormesh does not support RGB(A) arrays #2156

Description
Since matplotlib version 3.7 pcolormesh supports passing (M, N, 3) and (M, N, 4) values to produce RGB(A) images. But using that functionality with cartopy results in error.
Code to reproduce
This code without cartopy produces an image:
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import numpy as np
x = np.linspace(0, 40, 161)
y = np.linspace(0, 40, 161)
rgb = np.random.rand(161, 161, 3)
fig = plt.figure()
ax = fig.add_subplot(111)
ax.pcolormesh(x, y, rgb)
plt.show()
But if cartopy is used, the error appears:
