It has become clear that the Mac binary releases 3.8.10, 3.9.0 and 3.9.1 may crash or produce wrong results when used with more than 1 thread. Ways out:

1. Use only with -x=1.
2. Resort to release 3.8.9.

The Linux and MS Windows binaries are not affected.
