Disbelieved. Blamed. Retraumatised. These are just some of the ways that survivors feel when they're forced to recount unrelated reports of previous abuse in front of a jury. This can then be wrongly used to undermine their case – with devastating effects. Survivors who bravely report sexual violence deserve to be met with support and justice – not suspicion or disbelief. We're campaigning to change this. Join us, and write to your MP now. https://lnkd.in/epHSaQFj

Giving back to great causes is at the heart of who we are. Last night, we turned our attention to our charity partner, Victim Support, in our inaugural Public Sector Decathlon Games Night for an evening of fun and competition. Hosted at our King William Street office and championed by David Filmer, Head of Public Sector and Executive Sponsor for the event, the night raised an incredible £1,693. As the leading independent charity for victims in England and Wales, Victim Support provides free and confidential support for those affected by domestic abuse, sexual violence, hate crime and fraud. This donation will enable Victim Support to support a victim through the criminal justice system. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us! Katie Kempen, Chief Executive at Victim Support, said in response to the £53 million #Government funding package for #DomesticAbuse perpetrator programmes: “Programmes that tackle the harmful behaviour of men who abuse women have a major role to play in addressing the epidemic of violence against women and girls. We have long advocated for a robust approach to tackling the root causes of gender-based violence. However, they can only work when delivered alongside vital support for victim-survivors, which is why it’s deeply worrying that this huge investment hasn’t been matched with funding for victims’ services. This decision to channel funding into perpetrator programmes comes as funding for vital victims’ services has been cut - meaning women simply can’t access the help they need. With the criminal justice system in crisis and court delays at record levels, victims’ services are a life-line - now more than ever. “This investment in perpetrator programmes must go hand in hand with sustained long-term funding for services that support women and girls. Victim-survivors deserve nothing less.” https://lnkd.in/e5Eq3Bx6

Today's front page in the Guardian, from Alexandra Topping. Dame Nicole Jacobs' powerful new interview follows her and Baroness Helen Newlove's joint letter on the Comprehensive Spending Review, in which they warned that the government would miss its target to halve VAWG in a decade, with frontline service pushed to the brink by underfunding. This includes the sexual violence sector, and links to the open letter that Rape Crisis England & Wales Victim Support Imkaan Welsh Women's Aid Business Engagement and Women's Aid Federation of England sent to the PM in December 2024. https://lnkd.in/epZsixTm

On this #DayOfMemory, we’re raising awareness about 'honour'-based abuse. It's a form of #DomesticAbuse which is motivated by the perpetrator’s perception that a person has brought, or may bring, ‘dishonour’ or ‘shame’ to themselves, their family, or the community. It can take many forms and is centred around controlling the victim. There are an estimated 12 ‘honour’ killings each year in the UK, although the exact number is unknown (source: Karma Nirvana). Today we join others in marking the #DayOfMemory and remember those we’ve lost to ‘honour’-based abuse. #DayOfMemory #WeRemember

At Victim Support, we help children and young people to cope and move forward from the effects of crime. In this case study, we share the story of a 13-year-old girl we supported after she was threatened with a knife by another pupil. The perpetrator was arrested and put on bail. Two weeks later another terrifying incident happened when the girl was chased by the perpetrator and his friends. He was expelled from school, but his sister made the girl’s life a misery and she was constantly harassed. “My parents struggled to get me to leave the house, and I wouldn’t go anywhere without an adult. I missed out on socialising, education, experiences and events due to my anxiety and PTSD that I have now. For 17 months I was scared and isolated.” Her mental health suffered considerably, and she was unable to attend school. Nearly two years later the perpetrator was tried and found guilty. The victim is now a lot happier and has been able to return to school to sit her GCSEs. She is grateful for how her Victim Support caseworker has helped her and wants to speak out to help other young victims of knife crime. “There’s a lot of talk about knife crime at school and if anyone’s been through something similar to what I experienced they should certainly get in contact with Victim Support.” Find out more about how we can help children and young people: https://lnkd.in/eM9b_bUf
