Sovereign and secure communications for governments, from the creators of Matrix.
About us
Element is a new type of communications platform. It combines consumer messaging apps, collaboration tools and video conferencing to replace email, address shadow IT and improve security. Of most importance, Element offers sovereign, secure and interoperable communications - all based on the Matrix open standard. Sovereign The end-user organisation retains complete ownership and control of the entire platform and all the data it contains, enhancing privacy and protecting against vendor lock-in. Secure The entire Element platform, and the decentralised Matrix open standard, is end-to-end encrypted by default. Operating across a decentralised network, Element provides resilient communications in the toughest of environments. Interoperable The Matrix open standard ensures Element deployments can federate with partner organisations to support sovereign and secure real time communications between multiple organisations. How Element works for organisations Element can be self-hosted, or delivered as a fully-managed solution directly from Element or one of our many hosting partners. Element is the flagship app for Matrix-based communications, and is available to everyone free of charge. Designed by the creators of Matrix and the FOSS Synapse homeserver, Element Server Suite is a professionalised backend that delivers outstanding performance. It includes enterprise-grade features such as powerful admin control, advanced identification and access management, auditing and compliance. Who uses Element? Customers include NATO ACT (using NI2CE Messenger, an Element fork), United Nations, US Department of Defence, the French government (Tchap, an Element fork) and Germany's Armed Forces (BwMessenger, an Element fork). The importance of open source Element (and the Matrix open standard in which it is built) is committed to open source. Being open source ensures transparency, improves security and drives innovation by creating a healthy and competitive ecosystem.

🩷 We're delighted to be playing our part in helping T-Systems International deliver its TI-Messenger compliant solution to organisations such as BARMER. gematik GmbH's TI-Messenger initiative is a world-leading example of sovereign, secure and interoperable real time communications. 👏
Germany’s healthcare system has gone live with its TI-Messenger initiative, built on top of the The Matrix.org Foundation open standard! It sees digitally sovereign, interoperable and secure real time communications replace paper-based systems. It also protects against inappropriate consumer-grade messaging such as WhatsApp and Signal, and vendor-locked platforms such as Microsoft Teams. TI-Messenger is one of the world's most ambitious and progressive communications initiatives. By building on the Matrix open standard, the German healthcare system has introduced industry-wide real time communications that preserve each organisation’s digital sovereignty and ensures vendor-neutrality. There is an entire ecosystem of companies providing competing yet interoperable solutions including; AKQUINET, Awesome Technologies Innovationslabor GmbH, CompuGroup Medical SE & Co. KGaA, T-Systems International, Famedly GmbH, GEDISA – Gesellschaft für digitale Services der Apotheken mbH, samedi GmbH and x-tention. Congratulations to Timo Frank Marie Ruddeck, Jan Kohnert and everyone else at gematik GmbH and thank you to Tess Roder and the team at T-Systems International and BARMER for such a strong, positive and innovative partnership. https://lnkd.in/ejpnh-Qw

We're so pleased and proud to be a part of something so transformational! Thank you for your trust in us BARMER, T-Systems International and Deutsche Telekom Healthcare. And huge kudos to gematik GmbH for the TI-Messenger initiative to create sovereign, interoperable and secure communications across an entire industry!
💬🚀 Marcel Böttcher Michael Hübner Marek Rydzewski Roland Bruns Jonas Herkommer Frank Pütter Katharina Jahn Manuel Blechschmidt Damian Delvaux Tess Roder Pierre Boyer Tobias Wolf Mirko Binaity Daniel Maniés Daniel de Lorenzo-Ulsperger Malte Dopf Timo Frank Marie Ruddeck Jan Kohnert Julian Ohm Amandine Hegner Thomas Lewark Bérengère Codjo Oliver Jung Jacqueline Fochler Franziska Ramm Andreas Lill Pauline Spengemann Bernd Bergmann Lucas Friedrich Faehnrich Lukas Icke Henning Rütz

The US House of Representatives’ has banned the use of WhatsApp, seemingly over concerns around targeted advertising and AI. But a ban on WhatsApp makes sense anyway, because it’s a consumer-grade app. As such it lacks an array of required features, from record keeping through to secure end-user management. But Signal, iMessage and FaceTime are in the same boat. And messaging within Microsoft Teams isn’t end-to-end encrypted. All of those solutions are also siloed, creating fractured islands of conversations. Governments around the world are finding it hard to get a sensible real time communications policy in place, after the Covid-led dash to ‘anything that works.’ What’s needed is an open standard for real time communications to enable different solutions from different vendors to work together (similar to the way email interoperates regardless of which server or client organisations use). Something like Matrix… https://lnkd.in/edNP_Pp7

More than 400 people - from the Matrix community, public sector organisations and a whole mix of vendors - all working together to provide a digitally sovereign alternative to vendor-locked systems. We're really looking forward to it!
We’re delighted to announce that we already have connect2x GmbH, Element - creators of Matrix, ERCOM, Famedly GmbH and Rocket.Chat lined up as sponsors for The Matrix Conference 2025 in October! Seeing multiple vendors signing up so early reflects the strength and health of the Matrix ecosystem, helping to ensure end-users’ digital sovereignty and freedom from vendor lock-in. Better still, we already have confirmation that the European Commission, gematik GmbH and Zentrum Digitale Souveränität (ZenDiS) will be among the organisations presenting their Matrix-based initiatives.
