Helping teams make FORTRAN (C/C++) code Secure, Modern & Fast | Improving legacy code with Codee!

When people hear 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧, they often think of academia, research labs, or legacy government systems. But here’s the reality: 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧 still powers some of the most critical computations in the world like aerospace, nuclear energy, climate modeling and more. I’m convinced many private companies appreciate #Fortran for its performance, numerical stability, and decades of domain-specific code which matter more than hype for the newest language. The challenge? Fortran expertise and visibility are shrinking, so its use in industry isn’t always obvious. Where I’ve seen it: 🔍 Obviously, all of Codee's clients ✅ 🔍 General Atomics likely under nuclear fission/fusion group working on plasma simulations 🔍 Raytheon Technologies with simulation and testing of jet engine design 🔍 Tomorrow.io working on weather and climate forecasting (So many models i this industry like WRF, ICON, HYCOM, shumlib) 🔍 Jacobs developing computer simulation models of hypervelocity impacts on spacecraft materials 🔍 Dassault Systèmes with their toolsuite BIOVIA with thousands of lines written in Fortran I suspect it’s out there—quietly doing the heavy lifting. What’s your experience?

  • 🛡️ Did you know Codee’s Open Catalog doesn’t just list checks… it connects them to major #security standards? When you run Codee, you’re not only detecting potential bugs — you’re automatically mapping them to frameworks like: ▪️CWE (Common Weakness Enumeration) ▪️ISO/IEC 24772-8 (C++ vulnerabilities) ▪️SEI CERT C (Secure coding guidelines) This makes it easier to: ✔️ Understand the real security relevance of each finding ✔️ Align your code with established industry standards ✔️ Show compliance and strengthen trust in your software 👉 Curious to see how your checks map? Explore the Open Catalog: https://lnkd.in/dt-_9emP 🎥 Learn more in our #webinar: https://lnkd.in/du_aBjzr Which standard do you rely on the most for software security in your projects?

Helping teams make FORTRAN (C/C++) code Secure, Modern & Fast | Improving legacy code with Codee!

Do you think Fortran is still alive? 👩💻 Back in December 2024, we hosted our very first Codee webinar focused entirely on Fortran: “Codee for Fortran Simulation Software: Producing Fast, Maintainable, and Reliable Code.” I see that Fortran is still playing a major role in climate modeling, aerospace, nuclear energy and other high-performance computing fields, so this webinar was the first of many where as a company we started to position #Codee as the door to secure practices, faster results, and more reliable legacy and modern Fortran code. It was great to see the range of sectors represented—proof that Fortran is more alive than ever. But I still hear industry folks saying: 'Fortran is dead' 'I haven't used it since the 90's' 'Fortran is being migrated to other programming languages cause its so old' 📥 Having a network of +3k contacts in several technology fields, I'd like to know your thoughts. Is #Fortran still alive? Where is it used? Btw, here is the link to the webinar: https://lnkd.in/dSiyiGUC

Helping teams make FORTRAN (C/C++) code Secure, Modern & Fast | Improving legacy code with Codee!

Converting Fortran 77 to Fortran 90 is often seen as 𝘵𝘩𝘦 modernization step. ✅ But in reality, it’s only the beginning. Modernizing legacy #Fortran typically involves: - Avoiding implicit declarations - Using modules effectively - Code refactoring - Properly defining argument intent …and many more tasks depending on the project’s complexity Market feedback shows this process is far more challenging than it might seem at first glance. Have you been through this journey? What other modernization tasks do you apply? Are any of them automated, or mostly manual? I’d love to hear about your experiences and best practices. 👇 At Codee, we have a FREE guide for this: Fortran-lang Top 10 Recommendations for Modernization You can download it here: https://lnkd.in/dsSX4z9p

Helping teams make FORTRAN (C/C++) code Secure, Modern & Fast | Improving legacy code with Codee!

I recently chatted with Burl T. Ryding from Leidos who shared some incredible hiking tips for the Rockies 🥾🏔️  and told me about the Morris Worm of 1988, one of the first major internet worms that disrupted thousands of computers. A strong reminder that security matters everywhere even in programming languages like #Fortran. Historically known as “secure by obscurity,” legacy simulation code is increasingly exposed as systems modernize and standards like ISO/IEC and NIST SP 800-218 demand safety. If you work with Fortran, I'd like to know your thoughts on: 🔒 Do you think security is relevant for Fortran code? 🔒Is your software ready for systematic security reviews? 🔒 Are your practices aligned with modern standards? Tools like Codee help identify 24 key vulnerabilities, from unsafe memory access to legacy constructs helping ensure your code is secure today. You can see more in the 'Security' category in our Open Catalog of code guidelines for correctness, modernization, security, portability, and optimization: https://lnkd.in/dmAE9PMB

  • 🛠 How do you ensure your Fortran code is correct? This year we’re hosting a webinar on one of the most critical challenges in scientific and HPC software: code #correctness. “Ensuring Fortran Correctness with Codee” will showcase how hidden #bugs, computational inaccuracies, and crashes can be detected before execution — and how to prevent them entirely. We’ve seen how a single undetected error can cause major delays, financial losses, or even safety risks. Why take that risk? In this webinar, we’ll demonstrate how Codee #automates these checks, integrates with your workflow, and helps enforce best practices — making your Fortran code more robust, secure, and future-proof. ❓ Your turn: How does your team ensure correctness in Fortran projects? Manual reviews, automated tools, or both? 📅 Link to the webinar: https://lnkd.in/dqRyHRWD #Fortran #HPC #CleanCode #Codee #SoftwareQuality #Automation #CodeCorrectness

  • 💡 Use separate arrays instead of Array-of-Structs (#AoS) in #Fortran. Using an AoS layout can result in inefficient use of the memory subsystem — especially when some fields are unused in your loops. ✅ Recommended action: Break derived types into separate arrays per field. This improves data locality, as only the accessed fields are loaded into memory. For example, if a point type contains x, y, and z, but a loop only uses x and y, keeping them in their own arrays avoids wasting memory bandwidth on unused data. 📖 See the full example in Fortran and C here: https://lnkd.in/dvTvxK2f ☑️ Codee detects these patterns and helps you refactor them automatically for more efficient memory usage: https://lnkd.in/dZx-qBbE #HPC #software #simulation #memory #performance #optimization #CodeeTip
